Established in Nairobi in 1975, with the support of UNECA and the African Union, the Regional Centre for Mapping of Resources for Development (RCMRD) is an intergovernmental organisation with member states in Eastern and Southern Africa.

As a centre of excellence in Africa that has made significant progress in advancing Geo-Information services in the region, RCMRD promotes sustainable development through generation, application, and dissemination of Geo-Information and ICT products and services among its Member States and beyond. The organisation’s programmes focus on sustainable applications of Earth observation technologies and data-driven solutions, to improve management of natural resources, infrastructure, and the environment.

RCMRD recently won a bid to host the Group on Earth Observations’ regional initiative in Africa; AfriGEO. The Pan-African initiative serves as a framework for coordinating and strengthening partnerships within Africa, and as a gateway to Africa for international partners.
