Data Pitch is a EU-funded open innovation programme bringing together corporate and public-sector organisations that have data with startups and SMEs that work with data.
It is centred around a competition with several tracks which describe challenges, and a virtual accelerator programme (6 months) to help startups and SMEs develop solutions to meet these challenges.
The startups and SMEs put forward proposals for creating high impact, innovative products and services in response to the challenges defined by Data Pitch.
Successful applicants receive an important financial and advisory boost to their idea, with support to develop a concept into a robust and sustainable business.
The support they receive includes:
Equity free investment of up to €100,000
Introduction to investors
6-month business accelerator programme with ODI and Beta-i
Peer-networking and support via meetups in major European cities
Access to technology and data sets, as well as training materials and webinars by Data Pitch experts
To apply for Data Pitch, companies need to be based in one of the EU28 or Horizon 2020 associated countries and registered with the European Commission as an SME as well as being able to demonstrate access to data owned by another party or, in the case of the data provider led challenges, show how they plan to use the data being shared.
The current cohort
Eighteen startups are already participating in the programme, working with data providers including Deutsche Bahn, the largest railway operator and infrastructure owner in Europe, Portuguese retail giant Sonae, plastic packaging manufacturer Uniserv GmbH and social good startup imin.
The current startups are addressing a range of challenges - from improving efficiency in transport and retail supply chain systems, to predicting male fertility, analysing broken bones and devising the perfect, individually tailored holiday experience.
So far, these businesses have attracted over €830,000 in sales and investment, and have created 30 additional jobs. Furthermore, their final products and services are expected to create significant value from sales, investments and efficiencies and result in powerful new data-enabled business models.
